As we move closer to the holidays, many people are searching for just a little more cash – for holiday shopping, events and travel. Seasonal work, especially in the ‘gig economy’ is a big business and many turn to staffing companies for something short term. The benefits of getting work quickly and with flexibility become attractive, but what about the rest of the year.
For those of us in the staffing industry, we stress these same benefits year-round and continually work through pushing away the negative connotation surrounding temporary work. There are several reasons why staffing companies are important to the economy and to the job seeker beyond holiday season. In fact, over 3 million temporary and contract employees work for staffing companies in the US each week, according to the American Staffing Association.
1. More than 76% of temporary employees work full time, comparable to the overall American workforce at 82% (www.Americanstaffing.net).
It’s important to understand that while gigs and seasonal opportunities are available, even more during this season, temporary jobs are typically full time. And, additionally at Dean’s Professional Services 85% of our temporary employees working at least 32 hours (with good performance and conduct) are converted to full time employees for our clients. This is well above the industry average of 49% (www.Americanstaffing.net).
2. Staffing can get your foot in the door with large employers that you may otherwise have a difficult time getting into.
Some of the most prestigious and largest employers look to temporary staffing to fulfill their vacancy and project needs regularly. In fact, most have a contingent labor budget and have jobs that are segmented just for temporary staff. DPS works with most of the major hospital systems in the state of Texas. Our applicants get an opportunity to interview, work for, and network with management inside of hospital systems that take in hundreds of resumes a day and sometimes take 4-5 weeks just for on-boarding.
3. Staffing can be a “try before you buy” opportunity and provide flexibility.
About 20% of staffing employees cite scheduling and flexibility as a primary reason for choosing to work temporary, according to the American Staffing Association. Many of those large employers just referenced choose temporary staffing to provide flexibility, reduce costs, and save time. Applicants can take the same approach, why not use the staffing world as an opportunity to try different jobs, work for different companies? And, some staffing organizations (like Dean’s Professional Services) offers benefits and flex scheduling as additional incentives.
It’s important to note that 90% of temporary staffing employees say that working for a staffing company made them MORE employable. It gave them experience, a new skill, and more to add to their resume. For more information on the staffing industry, visit www.americanstaffing.net.
